Posting this a little late, but here is the playlist for Monday’s installment of Noctimania. Started out with some Shoegaze and Dreampop noise that headed into a more Post Punk direction as I got ready to announce the Echo &The Bunnymen ticket giveaway I will be doing on Saturday the 14th’s show (courtesy of Big Wheel Magazine). I had a lot of fun on this show. I had the great pleasure of playing a couple of exclusive tracks by VV Morgue out of San Diego. VV Morgue sound like if Siouxsie got together with The Screamers and had a baby that was raised on psychedelics and late 80′s Industrial. I followed up with some Secret Society Of The Sonic Six from L.A. with their gorgeous blend of dark, experimental frequencies and DaDa dance grooves. I also played some of the most lush and crystalline Apocalyptic Neo-Folk by my friend Robert (who is one of the most talented musicians I know) and his project The Truth About Wolves.

This show was dedicated to the late Poly Styrene (Marianne Joan Elliott-Said), who tragically died of advanced breast cancer on 4-25-2011.

In this tracklisting, I did a large block of Poly’s solo material mixed in with the work she did with the pioneering X Ray Spex. The rest of the show focuses on the influence and legacy she never expected to have via female fronted and/or all female punk rock, Riot Grrrl, and indie rock bands. She defied all “punk rock” archetypes in that she was a young, feminist woman of colour, who wore braces, wasn’t “sickly skinny”, and viewed the world honestly with both love and disdain as opposed to the “fuck everything for the sake of shock’s sake” pathos shared by most of her musical peers of the time. She stood out without trying. The world of both music and humanity has truly lost a great soul…

As I wrote on my Facebook yesterday, “RIP Poly Styrene…You were the ORIGINAL Riot Grrrl. You made it okay to be a person of colour in an otherwise white punk rock scene. You were beautiful until the moment you passed. You were a true innovator that has been duplicated many times, but your style has never, EVER been matched. Be at peace now, my sister.”
